The Westland region offers a vast array of kayaking options, from leisurely lake/lagoon paddles to extreme white water runs. Some of the more leisurely options are detailed below.
- Lake Mapourika. Located 5 minutes north of Franz Josef, access via the jetty on the southern end of the lake. It is a very scenic bush edged lake with great views of the Southern Alps.
- Okarito Lagoon. Located 20 minutes north of Franz Josef. Check tide times as it is best to kayak at or near high tide. The Department of Conservation have set up a detailed kayak trail for you to follow.
- Gillespie’s Lagoon. Located at Gillespie’s beach, access the lagoon from Gillespie’s bridge at the beach. Check tide times as it is best to kayak at or near high tide. The views are amazing, ancient kahikatea forests with a backdrop of the Southern Alps. Bring insect repellent.
